Craftsman Home Wood Restoration in Anaheim, CA

Anaheim is older than most people assume. The city was founded in 1857, and the Anaheim Colony Historic District holds houses from several eras side by side. Craftsman home wood restoration in Anaheim rarely means a single style. A street can run from a Victorian to a bungalow to a Revival house, and the woodwork in each has its own problems.

Three eras, three kinds of work

Victorian-era houses

Tall trim, turned details, wood porches, and thick doors. Exterior woodwork takes the weather and has usually been painted many times. Interiors often have original trim buried under paint or wallpaper residue. Careful stripping matters here, since the detail is the point.

Craftsman bungalows

Paneling, built-in buffets and bookcases, beams, wide casings. This is the work we know best, and we cover it in full on our Craftsman home wood restoration page. Original wood is usually fir or oak and is typically under paint.

1920s and 30s Revival houses

Spanish and period-revival homes with arched doors, plank doors, paneled rooms, and oak floors. The finish often fails before the wood does.

Older houses, older paint

Many Anaheim houses have been remodeled more than once. Trim was replaced in the fifties, paneling was painted in the seventies, and someone put wallpaper over something. We work through all of that. Older paint can contain lead, so we cover and contain the work area and take stripping in pre-1978 homes seriously.

What we look at on a first walkthrough

  • How many layers of paint or finish are on the wood, and what’s underneath
  • Whether trim is original, replaced, or mismatched
  • Damage that has to be repaired before any color goes on
  • Floors, doors, and cabinets that should be done together so the stain matches
  • Which rooms should be done first if the project is staged?

Related work

Most Craftsman jobs include more than one surface: wood floor refinishing, wood door refinishing, and kitchen cabinet refinishing. We’re based in Pasadena, where the bulk of our Craftsman work is, and the story behind that is on the Pasadena page. We also work in Irvine and the rest of Orange County.

Anaheim questions

Do you work on Victorian homes as well as Craftsman?

Yes. The methods are the same: careful stripping, repair in matching wood, stain matching, and a durable finish. The details differ.

Original trim tends to have thicker, more detailed profiles, tight, straight grain, and is often painted. Check a closet or behind a switch plate, where the finish may have been left alone.
