After restoring a door to its “like new” condition, it’s important to perform regular maintenance to ensure its longevity. Regular maintenance for wood doors should be performed before significant damage has occurred. This includes a light cleaning and sanding, followed by the application of a new coat of finish to the surface of the door. Romani Restoration offers hassle-free and excellent maintenance services for wood doors. It’s recommended that wood doors undergo maintenance every year to ensure their beauty and protection. Doors exposed to the sun and elements may require bi-annual maintenance. By keeping up with regular maintenance, the cost can be a fraction of the initial restoration cost.

Refinishing Steps

The first step in restoring an exterior wood door is to remove it from the hinges. This allows for easy access to all sides of the door for cleaning and repairs.

The next step in restoring an exterior wood door is stripping and sanding. We use specialized sanding equipment and stripping techniques to remove any old finish, scratches, or other damage. Using sandpaper, any remaining paint or rough spots on the door are removed. The door is sanded to create a smooth surface for the new finish. This step is important to ensure that the new finish will adhere properly and provide a beautiful, even finish.

Once the door is stripped and sanded, it should be inspected for any damage. If there are any cracks or holes in the door, wood filler can be used to repair them. The wood filler is allowed to dry completely before sanding it down to create a smooth surface.

Finally, it’s time to apply the finish. A beautiful stain can be used to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. The stain is applied in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. This step requires patience and attention to detail, as it’s important to ensure that each coat is applied evenly and smoothly.

Once the finish has dried completely, the door can be reinstalled. The door is reattached to the hinges, and any necessary adjustments are made to ensure a proper fit. The final result is a beautifully restored exterior wood door that looks as good as new.

In conclusion, restoring an exterior wood door requires a few simple steps, including cleaning, sanding, repairing any damage, applying the finish, and reinstalling the door. While it can be a time-consuming project, the results are well worth the effort. By following these steps, the beauty and function of an exterior wood door can be restored, enhancing the curb appeal of any home.
